During the centuries most of Maiori's monuments and fortifications was destroyed. The ancient Maiori was protected by two wall lines: the external one, the Baluardo of San Sebastiano, was built between St Angelo fortress (nowadays the Collegiata) and the Brusario Mountain. This line was completed with battlements and six circular towers and opened to the beach through big doors with drawbridges. Opposite the walls there was a moat which was flooded with the river water in case of emergency. The second wall line was called "pedemontana" (from which Via Pedamentina) completed with three big towers and some small towers too. Inside this line there was the Castle of St Nicola de Thoroplano which was the extreme refuge in case of any attacks. Traces of San Sebastiano bulwark are in Via Casa Mannini, although the level of the road in much more higher than the original.
