Palazzo Mezzacapo is testimony of the past splendour of Maiori. It is located in the very heart of the town, in Corso Reginna, and was built by the Mezzacapo Family in the 1800's. Once passed the large wood door, from the courtyard there are two big marble staircases leading to the fist floor, until 2009 the town hall headquarters. The interior as the furniture are very well preserved, and it is possible to admire many painting by "costaioli" painters. The most attractive feature of the visit is the big hall: full of mirrors and gold stuccho, it is dominated by a spectacular ceiling with frescoes of the "Olimpians triumph". Bullet holes from the second World War can still be seen in the ceiling. The hall was also a ballroom for Maioresi patricians.
It is worth a visit to the beautiful 1700' gardens, today public park. The gardens are unique both for the variety of flowers and the Maltese Cross design. This shape was due to Filippo Mezzacapo: he was a Maltese Knight but was obliged to leave the order to marry and have heirs. Interconnecting pools situated between the alleys were filled by a branch of Reginna river: excellent idea to keep fresh during the summer months
